Type True Rune

The Rune of Punishment (罰の紋章, Batsu no Monshō) is one of the 27 True Runes. It is the rune of the protagonist of Suikoden IV and is also usable in Suikoden Tactics.

Information

The Rune of Punishment is a True Rune representing atonement and forgiveness. As a cursed rune, it drains the life of its host in exchange for its considerable power. Once the host dies, their body is turned to ash and their soul absorbed by the rune, which then passes on to a new host. It is said that if a host can overcome this "time of atonement" then the curse will be lifted, but the truth of this is not clear.

The rune had been sealed in the Ruins of Obel for many years before being released by the Queen of Obel in order to prevent a pirate attack on the Kingdom of Obel. Since then, the rune has passed on to many bearers, from Rakgi's father to Graham Cray to his son and then to the pirates Steele and Brandeau before ending up in the possession of Glen Cott. Except for Graham Cray, who cut off his arm to escape the rune's curse, all the other bearers died using the rune.

After Glen died using the rune to repel a pirate attack on Razril, his successor who is the main character in Suikoden IV (Later named 'Lazlo' in Suikoden Tactics), would go on to lead the Headquarters Ship during the Island Liberation War, would end up with the rune. He was exiled from Razril for being allegedly responsible for Glen's death, this young man became embroiled in a war that started due to Kooluk's expansion progress, but continued due to Graham Cray's desire to obtain the Rune again. During this time, the young man managed to survive using the Rune's power a total of four times, before the power of the 108 Stars of Destiny moved the Rune into its little seen forgiveness phase, where it no longer drains the life of its bearer.

After helping the Island Nations once more at the Fall of Kooluk, the bearer vanished from the pages of history, knowing full well that his death would see the cycle of death and punishment start anew.
